[정치호 기자]</TD></TR> <TR> <TD colSpan=2 height=15></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><!--img_tag_e--><B>“탄탄한 한문 공부가 실력 높인 디딤돌”</B>쌍둥이의 실력을 키운 비법을 묻는 질문에 이씨는 서슴없이 한문 공부를 꼽았다. 한문이 지식을 이해하는 디딤돌이 됐다는 것이다. “생물의 환형동물·절지동물, 수학의 미분·함수 등 모든 교과의 용어들이 한문으로 이뤄져 있어요. 용어의 뜻도 모르면서 교과 내용을 이해할 순 없죠. 그래서 초등학교 입학 때부터 한자를 가르쳤어요.”<BR><BR>도전정신과 학습동기를 심어주기 위해 경시대회 출전을 목표로 한문 공부를 시켰다. 대회를 앞두곤 매일 모의고사 문제집을 풀게 했다. 부모가 한문 시험을 함께 준비하면서 경쟁의식을 부추겼다. 그 결과 형제는 초등 3·4학년 때 모 한자경시대회에서 2년 연속 대상을 휩쓸더니 지난해 아빠와 함께 성인 수준의 한자능력검정 준1급 자격증도 따냈다. 우림군은 “개념에 관한 한자어가 많이 실려 있는 도덕·국어·국사·사회 과목을 이해하는 데 도움이 됐다”고 말했다.<BR><BR><B>“지식 주입보다 공부습관 길러야”</B> 이씨는 지식 주입보다 공부 습관을 기르는 데 힘썼다. 공부습관을 기르는 훈련은 초등학교 입학 전부터 중학교 때까지 계속 이어졌다. 한문·수학·영어·일기 등 네 가지를 정해 학습계획을 세우고 매일 꾸준히 실천했다. 심지어 가족여행을 갈 때도 공부할 책을 챙겨가 저녁 때 문제를 풀었다.<BR><BR>한문은 매일 30분씩 기초 한자 300자 받아쓰기를 시작해 점차 한 시간으로 늘렸다. 틀린 문제는 오답노트에 적고 세 번 이상 틀리면 반복해서 썼다. 수학도 하루 20~30문제씩 풀었다. 풀이 시간에는 제한을 두지 않았다. 초등 4학년 때 부턴 엄마의 설명을 줄이고 아이 스스로 생각하며 풀도록 했다. 해설지와는 다른 풀이법을 고민하도록 유도했다.<BR><BR>“예전에 하림이가 새벽 3시에 아빠·엄마를 깨워 수학 문제를 풀었다며 환호성을 지르더라고요. 공부습관을 길러주지 않았다면 오랫동안 문제와 씨름하는 힘이 부족했을 거예요.”<BR><BR>그 덕에 하림군에겐 꼼꼼한 공부습관이 생겼다. 정답을 찾는 객관식 문제에서 나머지 틀린 항목들도 일일이 교과서를 찾아 교정하는 버릇을 갖게 됐다. 하림군은 “처음엔 한 문제를 풀어도 시간이 많이 걸려 힘들었다”며 “지금은 어떤 고난도 문제도 해결할 수 있다”고 말했다.<BR><BR>영어는 잠자리에서 영어 동화 테이프를 들려준 게 전부다. 쌍둥이는 머리맡에서 자장가나 자명종 대신 영어동화를 들으며 자고 일어났다. 부담 없이 영어가 귀와 머리에서 자연스럽게 맴돌았다. 수학과 관련된 물리·화학에 관심을 가졌던 쌍둥이는 지난해 천문·지구과학으로 눈을 돌렸다. 수학 지식을 응용하던 수준에서 벗어나 미스터리한 자연현상을 밝혀내는 데 매력을 느꼈다고 한다. 이후 성인용 천문·우주과학 교양서인 칼 세이건의 『코스모스』, 앤드루 프랙노이의 『우주로의 여행』 등을 찾아 읽으며 관심을 키웠다.<BR><BR><B>“알아야 가르친다 … 자녀교육서 수십 권 독파”</B> 이씨는 쌍둥이를 가르치기 위해 스스로 먼저 자녀교육서를 공부했다. 영유아 때부터 아이들의 발달단계별로 교육서를 찾아 읽었다. 이씨는 그중 『칼 비테의 교육(The Education of Karl Witte)』을 추천했다. 독일의 교육철학자 칼 비테가 미숙아로 태어난 아들을 천재로 키우며 얻은 교육경험을 담았다. 책에서 얻은 아이디어를 쌍둥이를 키우는 데 활용했다.<BR><BR>이씨는 주말과 방학마다 산과 들로 가족 여행을 떠나 공부 스트레스를 줄여줬다. 1월에는 유럽으로 가족 배낭여행을 떠났다. 이씨는 “아이들이 직접 숙식·교통편을 알아보고 현지에 머물 호텔을 예약했다. 등산을 하면서 가족 간의 결속력도 높였다”고 말했다.<BR><BR>독서교육도 큰 자산이다. 쌍둥이가 초등학생일 때부터 도서관에 자주 데려 갔다. 집으로 올 때 1인당 3권인 대출 기준을 꼬박 채워 9권의 책을 매일 빌려다 봤다. 연말엔 도서관이 주는 올해의 다독상도 받았다. “‘이 책 무지 재밌다!’며 호들갑(?)을 떨며 내용을 흘리는 방법으로 호기심을 부추겼어요. 그러면 서로 먼저 읽겠다고 책 쟁탈전이 벌어졌죠.” 이씨는 “어릴 때 그림조각퍼즐과 색종이 접기를 많이 했다”며 “아이의 특성에 따라 놀이 내용을 달리해 소질을 키워준 게 주효했다”고 말했다.<BR><BR>박정식 기자<TANGOPARK@JOONGANG.CO.KR> <SCRIPT type=text/javascript> // 이미지 컴퍼넌트 사이즈 조절 /* try { var oContent = document.getElementById("articleImage"); "단순히 진도를 빨리 나가는 선행학습은 의미도 없고, 아이들의 머리에 남지도 않는다"고 했다. "학교진도와 선행학습 진도를 각각 따라가느라 아이들만 두 배로 피곤해진다"는 말도 덧붙였다. 반면 학교진도에 맞춘 심화학습은 수업시간에 배운 내용을 기초로 더욱 깊이 있게 공부해 응용력과 사고력을 키워준다. <BR><BR><B>■겸손해야 발전 가능성도 커진다<BR><BR></B>각종 대회에서 상을 받으면서 주위에서 영재소리도 심심치 않게 듣지만, 김씨는 현택이에게 "너는 지극히 평범하다"는 말을 자주 한다. 아이가 자만하지 않도록 하기 위해서다. I must go and tell the king."</P> <P><BR>&nbsp;</P> <P>She had not gone far when she met her friend Cocky Locky.</P> <P>"Where are you going in such a hurry?" he called out. "I am going to tell the king that</P> <P>the sky is falling down," said Henny Penny.</P> <P>"I will come with you," said Cocky Locky.</P> <P>So Henny Penny and Cocky Locky hurried along together towards the king's palace. On the way they saw Ducky Lucky swimming on the pond.</P> <P>"Where are you going?" he called out.</P> <P>"We are going to tell the king the sky is falling down," replied Henny Penny. "We must go quickly, as there is no time to lose."</P> <P>"I will come with you," said Ducky Lucky, shaking the water off his feathers.</P> <P> <BR>So Henny Penny, Cocky Locky and Ducky Lucky hurried on together towards the king's palace. On the way they met Goosey Loosey, who called out, "Where are you all going in such a hurry?"</P> <P>"We are on our way to tell the king the sky is falling down," said Henny Penny.</P> <P>"I will come with you," said Goosey Loosey.</P> <P>So Henny Penny, Cocky Locky, Ducky Lucky and Goosey Loosey hurried on together towards the king's palace.</P> <P><BR>&nbsp;</P> <P>Round the next corner they met Turkey Lurkey. "Where are you all going on this fine day?" she called out to them.</P> <P>"It won't be a fine day for long," replied Henny Penny. "The sky is falling down, and we are hurrying to tell the king."</P> <P>"I will come with you," said Turkey Lurkey. So Henny Penny, Cocky Locky, Ducky Lucky, Goosey Loosey and Turkey Lurkey all went on towards the king's palace. Now on their way they met Foxy Loxy who asked, "Where are you going in such a hurry?"</P> <P>"We are going to the king's palace to tell him the sky is falling down," replied Henny Penny. "That is a very important message," said Foxy Loxy.</P> <P>"I will come with you. In fact if you follow me I can show you a short cut to the king's palace, so you will get there sooner."</P> <P>So Henny Penny, Cocky Locky, Ducky Lucky, Goosey Loosey and Turkey Lurkey all followed Foxy Loxy. He led them to the wood, and up to a dark hole, which was the door to his home. Inside his wife and five hungry children were waiting for him to bring home some dinner.</P> <P>That, I am sorry to say, was the end of Cocky Locky, Ducky Lucky, Goosey Loosey and Turkey Lurkey, for one by one they all followed Foxy Loxy into his home, and they were all eaten up by the hungry fox family.</P> <P><BR>&nbsp;</P> <P>Henny Penny was the last to enter the Fox's hole and she heard Cocky Locky crowing in alarm in front of her. Squawking with fright and scattering feathers, she turned and ran as fast as she could for the safety of her own farmyard. The birds were very glad, and they took bits to make their nests. The rooks had little snippets like gay pennons dangling from their rookery in the elms, and the chaffinches and yellowhammers mixed the threads with sheep's wool to line their beds. It seemed as if Sam Pig would provide material for everybody's home in the trees and hedgerows, but trousers won't last for ever, and Sam's were nearly done.</P> <P class=style91 align=left>Sister Ann patched the seats and put pieces into the front. She stitched panels in the two sides, and then she patched and repatched the patches until there was none of the original trousers left. They were a conglomeration of stripes and plaids and spotted scraps, all herring-boned and crossed-stitched with green thread.</P> <P class=style91 align=left>"Sam's trousers are like a patchwork quilt," remarked Tom, when Ann held up the queer little garments one evening after she had mended them.</P> <P class=style91 align=left>"Pied and speckled like a magpie," said Bill.</P> <P class=style91 align=left>Sam Pig leaned out of the truckle bed where he lay wrapped in a blanket, waiting for Ann to finish the mending. Sam found a fine bunch of fleecy wool where the flock had pushed under the crooked boughs of an ancient tree to sleep in the hollow beneath. The wool was white as snow when she had finished dipping it in the stream. But the harp called out loudly, "Master, save me! Save me!" and the giant woke.
